Kotuku and Landscape and Huia and Landscape, 2009.
These paintings were initially inspired by Paul Cezanne’s landscape painting. He is an artist I have long been motivated by. You can see the influence of his 'mark making' mainly in Kotuku and Landscape. I used Shellac (old fashioned varnish) in these works. I like the warm feeling it generates and the subtle impression of old worldliness the substance evokes.
These paintings, like the others I am selling, are an extension of the photographic work I started in 2008.

Still-lifes ( After Cezanne).
Trois Pommes Et Une Serviette (after Paul Cezanne), 2009.
This painting is quite big and I painted the objects from life. The apples and serviette were on my dining table for about a week, no one was allowed to move them.
Fruit Dans Une Grande Terrine (after Cezanne) and Quatre Fruit Dans Une Terrine (after Paul Cezanne), 2009.
Again, these paintings are a ‘take’ on a famous painting by Cezanne.
